US to Nigeria:Don’t postpone elections

The United States has advised Nigeria against postponing the general elections scheduled for next month. The US Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, gave the advice after he met the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, President Goodluck Jonathan and All Progressives Congress Maj. Gen. Muhamadu Buhari (retd.) in Lagos on Sunday. Kerry said that the US would deny entry visa to any Nigerian politician responsible for fomenting violence during the February elections. He urged the Federal Government not to postpone the elections as being canvassed by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.). The secretary of state said, “Given the stakes, it’s absolutely critical that these elections are conducted peacefully.” Kerry was in Nigeria to urge the political class to respect the outcome of the February 14 presidential election.

US doctor who beat Ebola heading back to Liberia

Worcester - The Massachusetts doctor who beat the Ebola virus he contracted while working in Liberia is returning to West Africa. Dr Rick Sacra is flying to Liberia on Thursday. Sacra is an assistant professor of family medicine and community health at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has worked frequently in West Africa as a missionary for the North Carolina-based Christian organisation SIM. He's scheduled to hold a news conference on Monday to discuss his work and Ebola. He's not scheduled to work with Ebola patients on this trip, but will treat patients with malaria and other chronic health issues. Sacra spent weeks in an Omaha, Nebraska, hospital recovering from Ebola last autumn. He is now immune to the disease blamed for the deaths of thousands in West Africa.
